Sunscreen 101

We're right in the middle of summer, and for many of us, that means a vacation at the beach. And THAT means using sunscreen is more important than ever. Skin cancer is no joke.

But there are so many options out there that it might be confusing to choose a sunscreen that works for you.

So we've put together this sunscreen guide to make sure it's really all fun and games this summer.

Sunscreen 101

There are two different types of sunscreen available — physical and chemical. Both provide protection from the sun but in different ways.

Physical or mineral sunscreens act like a shield and deflect the sun's rays from your skin. Titanium dioxide and/or zinc oxide are the active ingredients usually found in this type of sunscreen. These work well on sensitive skin.

Chemical sunscreens are like sponges and absorb the rays of the sun. The active ingredients usually found in chemical sunscreens include avobenzone, octinoxate, homosalate, octisalate, or oxybenzone.

Check the label.

Use sunscreen that has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher, provides broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays, and is water-resistant.

Apply enough and apply often.

The best sunscreen is the one that you use, so it's up to you whether that sunscreen is a lotion, gel, stick, or even spray. Keep in mind though that it might be more challenging to make sure that spray sunscreen is applied sufficiently.

Apply enough sunscreen to cover all exposed skin, including your neck and ears. You'll need around an ounce, or enough to fill a shot glass.

Reapply every two hours when you're outdoors.

Keep these tips in mind, and you'll be sure to have fun in the sun!
